Friday, January 15th, 2010

Gym is a place that houses workout facilities for physical exercise. Most gyms have main workout area which consists of free weights and other workout facilities. In gyms, mirrors are elsewhere so you can monitor proper position when performing a workout.

The gym has become the modern day hub of health and fitness, attracting people who are willing to put in the hard yards to stay healthy and well-toned. In the last decade, we have witnessed a massive increase in number of gyms and fitness centres across towns and cities, all housing modern equipment for the benefit of their clients. They have a constantly growing number of patrons, and the list doesn’t just include professional bodybuilders or sportsmen. People both young and old and across all sections of society visit gyms to stay fit and keep their bodies in perfect shape.

However, you must be cautious of centres that have come up just to profit from the modern rage for fitness, as they can have a detrimental effect on the health of the members owing to their lack of correct equipment and facilities. Therefore, selection of the correct gym is possible only if a few important factors are kept in consideration.

The gym should be situated not more than a few blocks away from your place of work or home so that commuting to and from the gym is less time-consuming, allowing you to maintain your fitness schedule. Things like organization of equipment, air conditioning, and how helpful the staff is, must also be checked before registering for a membership in a gym. Furthermore, the place must be large and convenient. Only gyms with standard equipment and modern facilities should be selected. This is a critical aspect, because faulty equipment will not only affect the results, but may even be risky for you.

Additional services like sauna, massage parlours etc are always a sign of a good gym. Day care centres are also available in some gyms, which provide parents with some time for work outs.

Look for such gyms that have personal training services so that you can avail exclusive expert advice. Personal training sessions will look after your individual needs in terms of a fitness plan and keep you charged up. The personal trainers available must be dedicated, focused and approachable so that you are able to derive the maximum out of their knowledge.

Finally, the expense for the gym should be in accordance with your financial situation and the services and facilities offered. Adaptable and long term packages offered by some gyms are especially helpful in increasing affordability, but try to avoid too long a lock-in period.

At the end of the day, the thing to keep in mind is that your gym should be a place where you feel the urge to go everyday and feel energized at the end of every session, and this idea will make your choice easier.

If you set an excessively difficult objective for yourself, then you may not find adequate time during the day for the complete set of exercises, and will gradually lose the desire to go forward with your fitness program. On the other hand, by setting the targets too low, you will soon begin questioning if all the effort is worth it. How Many Types Of Calories Are There??

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Calories, do you really understand its meaning? Most people still do not know what a calorie is. When asked about its meaning, most people would link it to dieting. However there is far more to calories than just a word that is linked to weight loss.

Understanding Calories

Ok…here goes… “calorie is a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree at one atmosphere pressure; used by nutritionists to characterize the energy-producing potential in food.” This is how it is defined as per Wikipedia. What they do not tell you is that there are different types of calories.Nor do they mention how they are used by the body.[I:http://weightlossforhealthylife.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/IvanGirevoy6.gif]

The main types of calories include: carbohydrates, fats and proteins. All of them burn when used in the body and then turn into heat energy, which is generally called calories.

Each type of calorie varies in terms of chemical and physical properties. Here are the essential things that you need to know about each calorie type.

The Fear Of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the most common type of calorie. It is found on foods that are rich on starch and sugar. Most of them are from plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, and grains. Most legumes, such as lentils, beans, and peas, are also rich with carbs. However, dairy products would be the only foods that come from animals which have a lot of carb content. (Kills the idea that milk and cookies is “kinda good for you” don’t it.)

Carbohydrates are normally classified into two subdivisions: simple and complex

Simple carbs are mostly sugars, such as glucose and fructose, which come from fruits and a few vegetables. Another type would be lactose, which comes from milk. Last would be sucrose, which comes from cane sugar. (Rule of thumb is any thing that ends in “ose” is a type of sugar.)

Sugar that is for everyday use is pure sucrose. Most of the simple carbs that you eat are sugars are mixed with processed foods such as cookies, sodas etc. These add-ons are the major reason why sugar accounts for 16% to 18% of total calories that are consumed by Americans according to most health surveys.

The complex types are chains of simple carbs, which primarily consist of starches along with fiber, which can be found in all foods that come from plants. However, plants store carbohydrates in the form of starch. Foods that have high complex carbs would include grains and products that come from it like bread and pasta. Additionally, potatoes, beans, corn, and other vegetables are also high in complex carbs.

Shadowed Proteins

Since carbohydrates seem to be the most popular type of calorie, proteins on the other hand seem to be the most over shadowed in comparison with the fame of fats and carbs. However, it is an important kind of calorie that you’ll need to develop body muscle.

Proteins have about 4 kilocalories per gram. Majority of this kind of calorie can not be naturally produced by the human body and must originate from dietary sources. The main sources of protein include: eggs, nuts, meats, legumes, grains, dairy products. (And yes some of these are also carb carriers.)

Recent studies suggest, men between ages 19 to 70 should consume 56g of protein everyday in order to avoid deficiency. On the other hand, women within the same age range should get at least 46g/day. Those people, such as certain athletes consume more protein then average in order to increase muscle mass.

Fats

Fats, would probably be the most unwanted kind of calorie by many. However, it still plays an important role in the normal function of the body. The body cannot absorb Vitamins A, E, D and K if not for it. They play an important role in the maintenance of healthy hair and skin. Protection is another function, since they protect various organs from shock. They are insulators, which is very important especially for people that live in colder climates.

Animals and plants both contain types of fats. Types of animal fats would include lard, butter and fish oil, while plant fats would include soy beans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, olives, coconuts, sesames, and vegetable oils.

How to get the Flat Stomach you have always Wanted

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Everyone wants a flat stomach. The tricks to getting it are very simple: Healthy diet and exercise. Eating the right kinds of foods and right exercises will give you the flat stomach you want.

Diet alone results in people who yo-yo. They go on the diet, they lose weight, then they have a lapseand break from the diet and gain most (if not all) of the weight back. So the simple rule is you’ve got to do both diet and exercise to make this work.

Healthy diets are balanced on their mixture of protein, carbohydrates and fats. Exercise helps your body burn calories, and to burn calories from fat before burning it from meals. It also tones up the muscles, which is what gives that sleek appearance.

Dieting on its own isn’t as effective as diet plus exercise. It’s the exercise that helps you go from losing inches to gaining muscle tone and vigorous good health. Diet by itself makes you look skinny and flabby.

Getting a flat stomach and losing weight means doing exercises to tone your middle as well as caloric restrictions. You’re not going on a diet, you’re making a lifestyle change. Start out by eating healthy, and do it in a “lifestyle makeover” and you’ll be more successful.

On dieting, start with what you drink. Water is the first and foremost liquid you should drink. If you drink sodas or coffee, try to drink two cups of water before drinking either of those; you’ll make them last longer, consume more calories and get the health benefits of drinking water.

After changing your liquid intake to more water, focus on eating more fresh vegetables. If you crave sweets, have a piece of fruit. Try to eat something from every color of the rainbow to get a full range of phytochemicals and vitamins.

If you eat meat, make it lean. While it’s possible to build muscle as a vegetarian, it’s a lot easier if you eat meat. It delivers protein that’s readily rebuilt by your body to make muscle tissue.

The foundation of a good diet is the whole grain layer. Grains are rich in vitamins and minerals, and in dietary fiber. Make sure they’re whole grains - brown rice, whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread.

While you want to cut out a lot of fats, don’t cut out all of them. They’re part of how your body signals satiation. A good source of soluble fats is milk and yogurt; aim for low sugar varieties of yogurt.

It is important that you limit your sugar and fat intake. Sugar gets turned into fat which, of course, makes you fat. Limit your intake of sugar to 12 to 15 grams per meal and your fat intake to 10 to 13 grams per meal.

Once you have your diet in check, it is time to get moving. Doing a combination of cardio, ab exercises and weight training will get your body whipped into shape.

Walking is an excellent cardio exercise, which burns fat nicely. You can supplement it with running, or bicycling, or any other exercise that gets your heart rate up, and keeps it up for a period of time.

Finally, there’s core body strength, and that means crunches. Nothing makes crunches fun. We know that, but they are necessary. You may also want to do some light weight training for overall body tone while you’re at it.
